Privacy policy for iOS Mimic application

1. Introduction

Mimic is an iOS app designed to capture and animate facial expressions using the iPhone or iPad’s TrueDepth camera system. The app transmits real-time facial animation data over a local area network (LAN) to a computer running the Blender application (for macOS, Linux, and Windows) via a custom plugin. This policy outlines how we collect, use, and protect your data during the use of Mimic and the associated Blender plugin.

2. Key Emphasis

Privacy is a priority. Mimic does not collect, store, or share your facial expression data. All processing occurs locally on your device, and the data stream to Blender is confined to your private network.

3. Information Mimic Uses

a. Data Collected via the TrueDepth Camera

  • Facial Expression Data: Mimic uses the TrueDepth camera to capture 3D facial motion tracking data to enable real-time animation of a rigged 3D character.
  • Camera Access: The app requires permission to access the TrueDepth camera system (if available on your device). This access is is for the purpose of capturing facial expressions for animation and video to sync with your recording in Blender.
  • Network Access: The app requires permission to access your network, solely for the purpose of streaming data over your LAN (local area network) to a computer with Blender and the Mimic Plugin installed.

b. Data Transmitted to Blender

  • Streaming to Blender: The app transmits the captured facial expression data over a local LAN network to a specified IP address (set by the user) on a computer running Blender with the Mimic plugin.
  • Data Scope: Only the raw facial expression data is streamed to Blender. No personal identifiers (e.g., names, email addresses, device IDs) are transmitted.

c. Data Retention

  • Local Storage: All data collected and transmitted by Mimic is processed and stored locally on your device (e.g., in the app’s temporary cache or memory) and is not streamed to or retained on our servers or any third-party platforms.
  • Blender Plugin Handling: The Blender plugin processes the received data in real-time for animation purposes and does not store it. Users must manage their own Blender installation and ensure it is configured properly.

4. Use of Information

  • Core Functionality: The TrueDepth data is used solely to animate a 3D character in Blender. This is part of the app’s primary purpose, which is to enable real-time facial expression capture.
  • No Personal Identification: Mimic does not store, transmit, or use any data that could personally identify you (e.g., biometric data, device logs, or user activity metrics).
  • No Third-Party Sharing: The app does not share your data with any external entities, including developers, advertisers, or other third-party services.

5. Data Security

  • Encryption: Data streamed to Blender over the LAN is transmitted in real-time and is not encrypted. This is intentional, as the connection is limited to your local network and not public or third-party.

6. Third-Party Services

  • Blender Plugin: The Mimic plugin for Blender is a proprietary, user-installed tool. The app does not interact with any third-party services or platforms.
  • No External Processing: The data is processed entirely on your device and the Blender computer, with no external storage or sharing.

7. User Control and Rights

  • Camera Access: You can disable camera access in your iOS device settings at any time. This will stop data collection and transmission.
  • Data Deletion: If you wish to delete any data collected by Mimic, you can manually clear the app’s cache or uninstall the app.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy periodically to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. Any updates will be posted on our website or within the app. Continued use of the app after an update indicates your acceptance of the new terms.
